ATTENDANCE

COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE: The Education Act requires that all students must attend school daily until the end of the year the student turns 17.  A record of daily attendance must be kept in a class register.  The register is a legal document and may be required to be produced in court.

PUNCTUALITY: It is essential that students be at school by 8.40 am in the morning.  They must also ensure that they are prompt to all classes.  Problems arise causing disruption of classes if students are persistently late to school or class.

ABSENCES: Absences for part or all day, or for several days, must be covered by a written explanation from the parent or guardian.  These notes must be dated and specify the reasons for the absence/s.  Notes should be brought to school by the student on the day of their return addressed to the Form Teacher.

PROLONGED ABSENCE: Where a student may be absent for a prolonged period of time the parents should contact the school as soon as possible.

LEAVING THE SCHOOL GROUNDS: No student is permitted to leave the school grounds without first signing out at the Student Services Centre and must have written permission from a parent/guardian.

STUDENT’S CODE OF CONDUCT

Girrawheen Senior High School has a specially designed program for managing students' behaviour.  The system aims to develop positive, co-operative relationships between teachers and students, and concepts of self-worth, self-discipline and respect for others.

RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and DOING YOUR BEST between students and teaches are essential to maintaining a pleasant learning environment.  The following code of conduct is necessary to preserve good order, site safety and the rights of all members of our school community.

  1. All students must obey the instructions given to them by teachers.
  2. Students and staff have a right to be safe at school.
    1. Aggressive behaviour, physical or verbal is not permitted.
    2. Actions which may harm others are not permitted.
    3. Retaliation and bullying are not permitted.
  3. Respect for other people’s property and equipment essential.  Stealing, wilful damage and graffiti are not permitted.
  4. All litter must be placed in bins provided.
  5. It is illegal to smoke, drink alcohol, take drugs or gamble on this school site.
  6. Attendance at school is compulsory.
  7. Students must not leave the school grounds during the day without signing out at the Student Services Centre.  (Parental permission is required.)
  8. When moving around the school, students must move in a sensible manner and use the paths provided.
  9. Students are not permitted at any time in areas designated out of bounds eg Lunch 1, Lunch 2, before or after school.
  10. Students must conform to the school’s code of dress policy.
  11. Students who bring mobile phones to school must have them turned off and out of site while on the school grounds.  Parental contact can be made with students via the Front Office not their personal mobile phones.

  1. Gum, and soft drinks are banned from the school site.
  2. Mobile phones must not be used on the school site.
  3. Ipod’s can only be used out of class time.

DRESS CODE

The school has had a Dress Code since 1992.  The code has been endorsed by students, parents, staff and the School Council.  We would ask all parents and guardians to help us by ensuring that their students wear the school uniform as the school will be strictly enforcing the dress code.  Consequences will be issued for those students not wearing strict dress code.  The advantages of a dress code are:

SAFETY The dress code allows the school to easily identify outsiders on site. These intruders can then be removed from our school.
IMAGE The Community's impression of the school is raised.
COST It is inexpensive and always fashionable.

THE CODE OF DRESS IS AS FOLLOWS:

TOPS

SECONDARY ASSISTANCE SCHEME FOR BOOKS & FEES 2008

To assist parents/guardians with the cost of education the Department of Education & Training has approved the following levels of assistance for 2008 for students in Years 8 – 12:

$135-00 Education Program Allowance paid directly to the school
$115-00 Clothing Allowance paid directly to the parent/guardian or the school.

To be eligible for assistance parents or legal guardians must hold one of the following cards:

  • Centrelink Family Health Care Card
  • Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
  • Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Card  (Please note:  The only Veterans’ Affairs Card that meets the criteria is a blue card that is issued each year and expires in December each year.  This card is income means tested.)

Parent/guardian must be the holder of the card that is valid some time during first term.  The only exception to this is when a student holds their own health care card and has been declared independent by Centrelink.  In this instance, a letter of confirmation from Centrelink needs to accompany the application.

To receive the assistance, parents must complete their application before 31 March 2008.  Application forms are available from the main office at the School.

YOUTH ALLOWANCE

Youth Allowance assistance is available to Year 11 and 12 students, if they meet stringent guidelines.  The allowance is paid fortnightly, direct to the student or parent.  It is a means-tested allowance paid fortnightly for any student over 16 years of age.  For further information contact Centrelink – Mirrabooka Office 132490.
