School Policy on Assessment
Based on Curriculum Council Guidelines Tests
Students who are absent for tests should report to the teacher as soon as possible after returning to school. If the student has an acceptable reason s/he may:
- sit for the same test or a similar test on returning.
- in the case of a practical subject, the testing of an alternative task is acceptable.
If the student does NOT have an acceptable reason he/she is awarded a “ZERO” or “NOT DEMONSTRATED” mark. (Acceptable reasons are: The production of a Medical Certificate or an acceptable reason given by a parent/carer.)
EXAMINATIONS
A student who is absent for an examination is awarded a ZERO mark. A student who is ill on the day of an examination must supply a Medical Certificate to be able to sit the examination on another day. In other exceptional circumstances, and with the agreement of the Principal, a student may sit for the examination, or the examination may be replaced with an estimate of performance.
ASSIGNMENTS/REPORTS/ESSAYS ETC.
- Students who fail to submit work by the date set, or by the mutually agreed extension date, may not be awarded a mark or rating for that task.
- Students who are absent when work is due, and have provided a satisfactory explanation must submit the work upon their return to school.
- If no satisfactory explanation has been provided for the absence, then the teacher is not obliged to mark the assessment. If however, the teacher agrees to mark the assessment, then the following conditions will apply:
CAF subjects – a grade no higher than ‘S’ can be achieved.
TEE subjects – a 10% penalty per school day will apply but late work will not be accepted after other student work is returned. - CoS subjects: If a task is not completed a student will be awarded RNM, requirement not met for the unit
- To graduate, a student must complete all four English CoS units.
REPORTING
Students receive a report each semester. Interim reports will be issued during term one for Years 8, 10, 11 and 12.
STUDENT OUTCOME STATEMENTS (SOS)
Assessments using SOS will continue in several subject areas for Year 8 and 9 students in 2008. Report formats that reflect the curriculum changes being trialed in the school will also continue. Students and parents will be advised by the relevant Learning Area of new assessment procedures and reporting.
PARENTS’ EVENINGS
These will be held during the year to give parents the opportunity to visit the school, meet staff, discuss the progress of their students and receive information regarding the various courses of study available at the school. Parents are encouraged to contact the school at any time if they have any concerns, with regards to their children.
